EU Special Representative meets Ilham Aliyev to discuss Karabakh and other issues

The new European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus, Toivo Klaar, on Monday monring (4 December) met in Baku with the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. The president and the EU envoy discussed issues related to the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and aspects of EU-Azerbaijan relations.

The meeting was attended on the Azerbaijan Side by Novruz Mammedov, Deputy Head of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration and on the EU side by the Head of the EU Delegation in Baku, Kestutis Jankauskas; Atanas Baltov, Political Advisor to the EUSR; and Johanna Ketola, the Political Advisor for the EUSR in Baku.

This was the first visit of EUSR Klaar to Baku since his appointment last month.

The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky will only be welcome at the dinner for heads of state and government leaders at the Huis ten Bosch Palace during the summit. This is evident from the summit programme, announced on Monday (16 June). In previous years, the Ukrainian head of state was given a much more prominent place in the programme. The United States, under the leadership of president Donald Trump, objected to Zelensky's invitation to this year's summit.
