South Ossetian chief prosecutor dies in accident

The chief prosecutor of South Ossetia has been killed in a car accident, according to the region's interior ministry, in an incident which is not being treated as suspicious by law enforcement agencies.

Merab Chigoev, who has been the region\'s top law official since April 2012, was prime minister between 1998 and 2001, and justice minister between 2004 and 2008.

He was hit by a car on January 9 while crossing the street in the city of Tskhinvali, authorities said.

“I take the investigation of this crime under personal control. But what else can be said, the case is actually already solved,” said South Ossetian leader Leonid Tibilov, according to the civil.ge news website.

“The Culprit should be punished to the fullest extent of the law,”

Chigoev was walking to his car after a wedding when the other vehicle hit him.

The driver, who was under the influence of alcohol, was apprehended at the scene according to eyewitness reports.

Leaders appreciated the strong convergence between the United States, Ukraine and Europe. Leaders agreed that ensuring the security, sovereignty, and prosperity of Ukraine was integral for wider Euro-Atlantic security. They were clear that Ukraine and its people deserved a prosperous, independent, and sovereign future, free from fear of future Russian aggression. Both the US and European leaders committed to work together to provide robust security guarantees and economic recovery support measures for Ukraine in the context of an agreement on ending the war. This would include commitments to: Provide sustained and significant support to Ukraine to build its armed forces, which should remain at a peacetime level of 800,000 to be able to deter conflict and defend Ukraine’s territory. A European-led ‘multinational force Ukraine’ made up from contributions from willing nations within the framework of the Coalition of the Willing and supported by the US. It will assist in the regeneration of Ukraine’s forces, in securing Ukraine’s skies, and in supporting safer seas, including through operating inside Ukraine.
