Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan want to turn the Caspian Sea "into a broad arena of international partnership"

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on Wednesday morning ended his official visit to Azerbaijan and returned back to Ashghabat. Yesterday the President had meetings with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev, and other Azerbaijani officials. Both sides hailed the level of relations between the two countries and declared themselves pleased with the results of the visit.

President Berdimuhamedov told a press conference in Baku on Tuesday

"The highest level of negotiations was held between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan today. During the meetings, the sides discussed issues and prospects of bilateral relations,regional and international policy issues, and defined specific directions of future cooperation. I particularly emphasize the constructive and content character of the negotiations that have been a tradition between the two countries. During the meetings, we highly appreciated the current level of bilateral dialogue in all areas - political, economic, cultural and humanitarian. Our relations with Azerbaijan are developing dynamically and rising on the basis of principles of mutual respect, equality and mutually beneficial cooperation".

"Both countries are in favor of transforming the Caspian Sea into a source of long-term stability in Eurasia and a broad arena of international partnership," he added.

On his part President Aliyev that the people of Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan are bound by history, 


"We have lived together for centuries, we have been friends, and we have lived as brothers. Today we are successfully developing as two independent states. Your visit will bring new dynamics to our relations. We have very successful cooperation in a number of areas and this cooperation will deepen. We attach great importance to your visit. I am sure that your visit will be a very important step in the development of Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan relations of friendship and brotherhood."

The Azerbaijani president said there are very good opportunities for development and cooperation in political, economic, humanitarian, cultural, transportation and other spheres.

Russian President Vladimir Putin  remains focused on the "near abroad". Tomorrow and on Monday (21-22 December) Putin will attend a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council and an informal meeting of CIS leaders in St. Petersburg. The Kremlin press service reported that during the EAEU meeting, the leaders plan to discuss current issues related to the EAEU's activities, outline guidelines for further deepening integration processes and developing the Union's single market, and approve a number of significant documents and decisions. Furthermore, at Vladimir Putin's initiative, the traditional informal meeting of the leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States will take place in St. Petersburg on December 22. The Russian President will also hold bilateral discussions with the leaders of a number of countries.
