Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on Wednesday morning ended his official visit to Azerbaijan and returned back to Ashghabat. Yesterday the President had meetings with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev, and other Azerbaijani officials. Both sides hailed the level of relations between the two countries and declared themselves pleased with the results of the visit.

President Berdimuhamedov told a press conference in Baku on Tuesday

"The highest level of negotiations was held between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan today. During the meetings, the sides discussed issues and prospects of bilateral relations, regional and international policy issues, and defined specific directions of future cooperation. I particularly emphasize the constructive and content character of the negotiations that have been a tradition between the two countries. During the meetings, we highly appreciated the current level of bilateral dialogue in all areas - political, economic, cultural and humanitarian. Our relations with Azerbaijan are developing dynamically and rising on the basis of principles of mutual respect, equality and mutually beneficial cooperation".

"Both countries are in favor of transforming the Caspian Sea into a source of long-term stability in Eurasia and a broad arena of international partnership," he added.

On his part President Aliyev that the people of Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan are bound by history,

"We have lived together for centuries, we have been friends, and we have lived as brothers. Today we are successfully developing as two independent states. Your visit will bring new dynamics to our relations. We have very successful cooperation in a number of areas and this cooperation will deepen. We attach great importance to your visit. I am sure that your visit will be a very important step in the development of Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan relations of friendship and brotherhood."

The Azerbaijani president said there are very good opportunities for development and cooperation in political, economic, humanitarian, cultural, transportation and other spheres.

Thursday Interview: Murad Muradov

Today, commonspace.eu starts a new regular weekly series. THURSDAY INTERVIEW, conducted by Lauri Nikulainen, will host  persons who are thinkers, opinion shapers, and implementors in their countries and spheres. We start the series with an interview with Murad Muradov, a leading person in Azerbaijan's think tank community. He is also the first co-chair of the Action Committee for a new Armenian-Azerbaijani Dialogue. Last September he made history by being the first Azerbaijani civil society activist to visit Armenia after the 44 day war, and the start of the peace process. Speaking about this visit Murad Muradov said: "My experience was largely positive. My negative expectations luckily didn’t play out. The discussions were respectful, the panel format bringing together experts from Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey was particularly valuable during the NATO Rose-Roth Seminar in Yerevan, and media coverage, while varied in tone, remained largely constructive. Some media outlets though attempted to represent me as more of a government mouthpiece than an independent expert, which was totally misleading.  Overall, I see these initiatives as important steps in rebuilding trust and normalising professional engagement. The fact that soon a larger Azerbaijani civil society visits to Armenia followed, reinforces the sense that this process is moving in the right direction."
