US President Donald Trump arrived in China on Wednesday (13 May) for a two-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, marking the first visit by a US president to China in nearly a decade. Trump was welcomed in Beijing with a military honour guard and an official reception.
The talks are expected to focus on trade, technology, the Iran war, and Taiwan. Trump said he would urge Xi to “open up” China further to US businesses:
"I will be asking President Xi, a Leader of extraordinary distinction, to 'open up' China so that these brilliant people can work their magic," he said in a post on Truth Social, referring to the CEO delegation.
"I will make that my very first request."
Asked about Trump's post, Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for China's foreign ministry, said Beijing stands ready to "expand cooperation, manage differences and inject more stability and certainty into the turbulent world".
Several prominent business leaders joined Trump’s delegation, including Elon Musk and Jensen Huang. Preparatory trade talks between US and Chinese officials were also held in South Korea ahead of the summit.
