Since December, South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF), Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition (SPLM/A-IO) factions, and allied community militias have been fighting across Jonglei, Upper Nile, Unity, and parts of Eastern Equatoria.
Incendiary rhetoric by military officials have stoked fears of a renewed civil war, and over 100,000 people have been displaced due to intensifying violence, government aerial bombardments, restrictions on humanitarian access, food insecurity, and flooding. General Johnson Olony, deputy chief of disarmament and demobilization of the SSPDF and leader of the government-allied Agwelek militia, urged forces to "spare no lives... not even the elderly... not even a chicken."
The government walked back these comments, but civilians and humanitarian organisations remain under pressure.
