Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni is in Georgia at the start of an official visit to the South Caucasus, which will also see him travelling to Armenia and Azerbaijan. This is the first visit by an Italian Foreign Minister to the three South Caucasus states since their indpendence in 1991
A statement from the Farnesina (Italian Foreign Ministry) stressed the importance of the visit as Italy prepares to take its seat on the UN Security Council and the Chairmanship of the G7 countries, and above all the Chairmanship of the OSCE in 2018 where Italy will be expected to play a role with the solution of the unresolved conflicts in the region.
In Georgia the head of the Italian diplomacy will meet with President Margvelashvili, Prime Minister Kvirikashvili and Foreign Minister Janelidze.
