A Baku Military Court has handed down life prison sentences to several former Nagorno-Karabakh officials in a high-profile war crimes trial in Azerbaijan.
Among those sentenced to life imprisonment are former Nagorno-Karabakh foreign minister David Babayan, former speaker Davit Ishkhanyan, and former military commanders Levon Mnatsakanyan and his deputy Davit Manukyan. Former Nagorno-Karabakh president Arayik Harutyunyan was also sentenced to life in prison.
Two other former presidents, including Bako Sahakyan, received lengthy prison terms rather than life sentences. The verdicts come after a lengthy trial in which 15 former officials were accused of a wide range of offences, including war crimes, terrorism, violations of the laws and customs of war, and other serious charges under Azerbaijan’s criminal code.
Defendants denied the accusations during the proceedings, and their lawyers had argued that the charges were unproven and called for acquittals.
A separate trial is ongoing for former Nagorno-Karabakh state minister Ruben Vardanyan, who faces his own set of serious charges.
The case has been closely watched because of its political and legal implications for Armenia–Azerbaijan relations and the broader South Caucasus post-conflict environment.
