US supports TANAP project

US support implementation of the project of Transanatolian gas pipeline and consider this program important in issues of European energy security.

The statement came from coordinator of the US Department of State for issues of energy security Carlos Pascual speaking at the session of the Atlantic Council for issues of energy and economy in Istanbul.

He said the energy routes passing via Turkey are a chance for Europe.

"I would especially like to note the role of TANAP in this issue. In this issue the role of Turkey and Azerbaijan is very important", Pascual said.

The TANAP project  envisages construction of the gas pipeline from the eastern border of Turkey to the western border which will supply gas from the Azerbaijani field Shah Deniz to Europe.

On 26 June Azerbaijan and Turkey signed an intergovernmental agreement on TANAP. The pipeline construction will start next year and finish in 2017.
