In Karabakh, both sides report fatal casualties

Armenian and Azerbaijani sources are reporting casualties in separate incidents in the Karabakh conflict zone. Three Armenian soldiers were killed on Friday afternoon. An Azerbaijani soldier was reported killed on Thursday.

According to the press service of the military formations of the self-declared Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, quoted by the Armenian media, "the adversary violated the ceasefire regime at about 6:05 pm on Friday, using AGS-17 in the direction of the protection area of one of the central military units under the subordination of the Defense Army. Consequently Defense Army servicemen Arayik Matinyan (born in 1997), Vigen Petrosyan (born in 1997) and Vardan Sargsyan (born in 1997) were mortally wounded". No further information is available, but the Azerbaijani media is also reporting the incident saying that Azerbaijani forces retaliated to cease fire violations.

Earlier it was reported that an Azerbaijani soldier was killed on Thursday as a result of Armenian fire. The soldier, Sultan Shahvaladov, from Gusar in Northern Azerbaijan was buried in his home town with military honours on Friday.

There are as yet no more details about the incidents.

Armenian Prime Minister confirms ambitous reform programme and EU membership bid

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Armenia wanted to become a member of the European Union within twenty years and will commit to an ambitous reform programme to meet the criteria of EU accession. In a press conference on 16 July, Pashinyan referred to his recent visit in Brussels and said the law adopted by the Armenian parliament meant the country seeks to join the EU. He acknowledged that this was not a simple process and all EU member states needed to agree to Armenia’s membership. He emphasised that regardless of whether Armenia ultimately joins the EU, the country will continue its ambitious reform programme.
