The European Union has said it sees no tangible signs that Russia is engaging seriously in efforts to secure peace in Ukraine, following the latest round of talks in Geneva involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia.
Speaking at the European Commission’s midday briefing in Geneva, EU foreign affairs spokesperson Anouar El Anouni said that continued Russian attacks on Ukraine indicate a lack of readiness to pursue a peaceful settlement. He noted that Ukraine had been subjected to further missile and drone strikes in the days leading up to the negotiations, according to Ukrainian authorities.
El Anouni said the European Union would continue to exert pressure on Russia for as long as the fighting continues. He also stressed that any decisions regarding Ukraine must involve Europe at the negotiating table.
The European Union confirmed that national security advisers from France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom were involved in the Geneva process, holding consultations alongside the Ukrainian and United States delegations.
