A crowd, reported to be around 3,000 strong, demonstrated against the proposed appointment of Serzh Sargsyan as the new prime minister of Armenia. Sargsyan stepped down as president on Monday at the end of a two term stint. Also as of Monday constitutional changes approved in 2016, triggered in, transferring executive power from the president to the prime minister. On Thursday (12 Aprl) the ruling Republican Party announced that it would nominate Sargsyan to the post of prime minister on Tuesday (17 April).
The demonstrations organised by a movement calling itself "Reject Serzh" are spearheaded by the opposition Yelk Party and are led by its leader parliamentarian Nikol Pashinyan.
