Azerbaijan's ruling Yeni Azerbaijan Party, the New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) announced on Thursday (28 November) that its MPs will propose the dissolution of parliament and the holding of parliamenary elections at a session on Friday.
Reports in semi official media sources in Baku say that new elections are needed to elect a new parliament that will be able to more actively support the reform agenda initiated by president Ilham Aliyev. The decision was announced after a special session of the Political Council of YAP.
It is not yet clear when elections will be held. Parliamentary elections were scheduled to be held in Azerbaijan in October 2020. The Azerbaijna Parliament has 125 members all elected from single candidate majoritarian consituencies
