Asian Development Bank appoints new Country Director for Azerbaijan

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has appointed Sunniya Durrani-Jamal as its new Country Director for Azerbaijan. Ms Sunniya Durrani-Jamal will be responsible for managing ADB's operations in Azerbaijan and its relations with the Government of Azerbaijan and other stakeholders. 

The new ADB Country Director for Azerbaijan has said that her priority is to "help diversify the economy and improve the quality of life for the people of Azerbaijan. This includes expanding renewable energy, addressing climate change, and helping the Caucasus country transition to a private sector-led green economy. The Asian Development Bank is also playing a key role in supporting Azerbaijan's COP29 Presidency through capacity building. This includes strengthening the expertise of the COP29 Organising Committee, particularly in the area of climate finance.

A nearby tugboat responded to a distress call from the Conscience, which was carrying 12 crew members and four civilians, Malta’s government said, adding that those aboard refused to leave their ship. The group was safe and no injuries were reported, it said.
