Four soldiers killed, twelve wounded, in serious clash with insurgents in Chechnya

Russian media is reporting that four soldiers have been killed and twelve wounded in a serious clash between law enforcement forces and insurgents in the Republic of Chechnya. The incident took place late on Sunday in the district of Vedeno close to the border with Georgia.

Itar-Tass reports that Russian Interior Ministry troops found a well fortified base of the insurgents near the village of Tazen-Kala. The insurgents offered resistance and at least three militants were killed. According to the agency the troops are now pursuing a group of ten militants in hard-to-reach mountainous area.

This is the most serious incident of the new year in Russia's troubled North Caucasus Region.
