OSCE MINISTERIAL CONFERENCE OPENS IN VILNIUS

The annual meeting of the Foireign Ministers of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) opened in Vilnius on Tuesday. The Foreign Ministers of the 56 member states of the organisation.

Amongst the issues on the agenda are protracted conflicts, transnational threats, media freedom and enhanced engagement with the OSCE’s Partner countries, including in the Southern Mediterranean and Afghanistan.

It is expected that the Foreign Ministers will also focus on issues of European security following the decisions taken by the summit of the organisation in Astana last year.

Lithuania,which has chaired the organisation for the last year will hand over the Chairmanship to Ireland.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday 5th November that he planned to visit the five Central Asian countries in the coming year, as he met their foreign ministers as part of a Trump administration charm offensive aimed at the resource-rich region. The presidents of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are set to meet US President Donald Trump in Washington on 6th November for talks that are likely to include discussions of rare earths minerals and other resources in the Central Asian nations.
