One of the major challenges of present-day Azerbaijan is water supply. Thus the launch of the construction of a major new water reservoir in Lachin is of great importance
On Saturday, 11 July, Azerbaijan president Ilham Aliyev, unusually dressed in a T Shirt, laid the foundation of the Khakarichay reservoir in Lachin.
The chairman of the State Agency for Water Resources of Azerbaijan, Zaur Mikayilov, informed Aliyev about the project.
It was noted that the project calls for the creation of a reservoir on the Khakarichay River, which forms within Azerbaijan's borders, with a total capacity of 100 million cubic meters and a usable volume of 90 million cubic meters. A main pipeline with a capacity of 8 cubic meters per second and a length of approximately 172 kilometers will also be built.
This infrastructure will have the potential to provide high-quality drinking water at a rate of 2.5 cubic meters per second to approximately 700,000 people in the Lachin, Gubadli, Zangilan, Jabrayil, Fizuli, Khojavend, and Aghdam districts.
The construction of three hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) with a total capacity of 10.81 MW is also planned on the main pipeline fed by the Khakarichay reservoir.
