South Ossetian chief prosecutor dies in accident

The chief prosecutor of South Ossetia has been killed in a car accident, according to the region's interior ministry, in an incident which is not being treated as suspicious by law enforcement agencies.

Merab Chigoev, who has been the region\'s top law official since April 2012, was prime minister between 1998 and 2001, and justice minister between 2004 and 2008.

He was hit by a car on January 9 while crossing the street in the city of Tskhinvali, authorities said.

“I take the investigation of this crime under personal control. But what else can be said, the case is actually already solved,” said South Ossetian leader Leonid Tibilov, according to the civil.ge news website.

“The Culprit should be punished to the fullest extent of the law,”

Chigoev was walking to his car after a wedding when the other vehicle hit him.

The driver, who was under the influence of alcohol, was apprehended at the scene according to eyewitness reports.

US - Russia Summit to be held next week to discuss war in Ukraine

A meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump has been agreed, a Kremlin official said on Thursday 7 August, the eve of a White House deadline for Moscow to show progress toward ending the 3-year-old war in Ukraine. Putin’s foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov, quoted by AP, said a summit could possibly take place next week at a venue that has been decided “in principle.” Next week is the target date for a summit, Ushakov said, while noting that such events take time to organise and no date is confirmed. The possible venue will be announced “a little later,” he said.
