Sargsyan and Mogherini meet in Vienna

Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan met the European Union’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini in Vienna on Monday evening, where they discussed the ongoing situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“Issues referring to regional developments and security were addressed at the meeting. In that context, the sides touched upon the escalation in Nagorno Karabakh conflict zone in early April,” Armenpress reported. During the meeting a reference was also made to the agenda of Armenia-EU bilateral relations, including cooperation in separate spheres.”

Sargsyan was in Vienna to meet Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev for the first time since ongoing low-level hostilities between the two countries boiled over into four days of fierce fighting at the start of April, which killed dozens.

The meeting was facilitated by the OSCE, which is headquartered in the Austrian capital. Sargsyan also had a one-on-one meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry.

The sides hoped that the meetings initiated by the foreign ministers of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chair countries will help to overcome the existing situation and establish peace and stability in the region,” according to Armenpress.
