Türkiye is assessing various potential steps that could be taken if tensions between the United States and Iran were to escalate into an open conflict, a Turkish diplomatic source told Reuters on Wednesday, 25 February 2026.
Türkiye shares a border with Iran to its east and opposes any US military intervention in the region. Iran has threatened to strike US bases in the region. On Wednesday, Tehran dismissed President Donald Trump’s accusations of “sinister nuclear ambitions” in his State of the Union address on Tuesday 24 February. Trump claimed that Iran was developing missiles that could strike the United States, as Washington continues to escalate its military presence around the Gulf region.
"Naturally, all aspects of the measures that could be taken in the event of a negative development are being evaluated," the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
"All scenarios are being considered; and steps that can be taken to ensure the safety of our citizens are being worked on," the person said, but added any steps that would "violate Iran's sovereignty" were "out of the question".
