New Pope, new Chancellor, same old Trump

The Catholic Church has a new leader. Robert Prevost was not discussed by the media before being announced as the new Pope on Friday. He will follow the Church’s mantra, that has served it well over two thousand years, to be as flexible as necessary and as rigid as possible Europe has fresh energy in the person of the new German chancellor, Friedrich Merz. Despite the wobbly start in the German Parliament, Merz in the four days after his swearing-in met key European leaders, and laid the basis for his Chancellorship. Meanwhile, Donald Trump statements continue to hanker for the past. His call for the re-opening of the prison on Alcatraz is a case in point. Trump marks the end of the “American era”. The US will remain a rich and powerful country, but its global role will be much diminished.

Russian media continue to speculate about a possible Chinese-Russian military alliance. The influential newspaper Nezavisimaya Gazeta says that this is unlikely. The newspaper cites Russian experts as saying that bloc concepts were obsolete.

EU will support COVID-19 vaccination program in Africa

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced last Friday that the EU will provide €100 million in humanitarian assistance to support vaccination programs in Africa that will be led by the African Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. The funding is necessary for countries with critical humanitarian needs and fragile health systems.

Russia tripled its gold exports in 2020 after the coronavirus pandemic had made oil and gas revenues plummet, the Russian newspaper Izvestia writes. However this year is not expected to be so good for gold producers. According to economists at Morgan Stanley weak inflation, coupled with an improving economic outlook, will continue to weigh on gold prices.
