Units of the Russian military base of the 58th combined arms army of the Southern Military District (Southeast Military District)are holding military drills in South Ossetia. Also participating are units of the Armed Forces of the self-declared Republic of South Ossetia.
According to the press service of the Russian Southern Military District, more than 3500 military personnel of the Southern Military District are taking part in tactical exercises and about 800 units of weapons and military equipment are involved, including: T-72B3 tanks, BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles, and self-propelled artillery installations " Carnation "," Sani "mortars, automatic and hand grenade launchers AGS-17 and RPG-7, as well as small arms.
South Ossetia is considered a part of Georgia by the international community. Georgia insisits that South Ossetia is currentkly under Russian military occupation, and says that the Russian military presence there as illegal.
