Russia’s censorship authority, Roskomnadzor, is expected to begin fully blocking the messaging platform Telegram from 1 April, according to sources cited by the Telegram channel Baza. The regulator has neither confirmed nor denied the reports.
Baza said the measure would amount to a “total blocking” of Telegram across the Russian Federation, affecting both mobile internet and Wi-Fi connections. The restrictions would mirror earlier blocks on Instagram and Facebook, both owned by Meta, which is designated as an extremist organisation and banned in Russia.
Roskomnadzor has recently stepped up measures to slow Telegram, warning that further restrictions will follow if the company does not comply with Russian legislation. Telegram founder Pavel Durov has said the pressure is aimed at pushing users towards a state-controlled messaging service promoted by the Kremlin.
