Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has accused Brussels and Kyiv of “declaring war” on Hungary after Politico reported on EU discussions about fast-tracking Ukraine’s accession and ways to bypass Hungary’s vetoes on Ukraine-related decisions.
In a post on X, cited by European Pravda, Orbán called Politico the “Brusselian elite’s official publication” and urged Hungarians to “stop them at the ballot box” in April, portraying his Fidesz party as the only guarantee of Hungarian sovereignty.
The Politico article outlines an unprecedented idea of Ukraine’s “accession in advance”, potentially granting partial EU membership by 2027 without relaxing core requirements, and details “plans A, B and C” within the EU to deal with Hungary’s obstruction, with the main scenario assuming Orbán’s electoral defeat.
The comments come amid a close race at home. Opposition leader Péter Magyar said Orbán’s camp was preparing to blackmail him with secretly recorded videos, while recent polls show his Tisza party leading Fidesz.
