An Azerbaijani Member of Parliament, Gudrat Hassanguliyev has proposed that meetings of the country's parliament be televised live.
"It would be good if the meetings of the Milli Majlis were broadcast on television and voters could see the views voiced here live," the MP said this morning at a session of the parliament.
Whilst parliament is televised live ion many countries in the world, this practise has not been happening in Azerbaijan. In fact for decades the parliament, known locally as the Milli Meclis remained stagnated in its work procedures. A new parliament was elected in February and a new Parliamentary leadership is now in office headed by the first female Chairperson, Sabiha Gafarova. Gafarova has initiated a number of changes, including in the personnel of the parliament, some of whom had been in place since Soviet times. The work of the Parliament was disrupted somewhat in the last weeks because of the restrictions related to the coronavirus, but sessions have now resumed.
The Azerbaijan Parliament has 125 members all elected in single seat constituencies.
