Azerbaijan "ready to sign" strategic partnership with EU - foreign minister

Azerbaijan is ready to sign a document on strategic partnership with the EU, the country's foreign mnister said on Tuesday.

"Azerbaijan has already presented the document on Strategic Partnership project to the European Union," said Elmar Mammadyarov, according to the APA news agency.

"Mrs. Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, will pay an official visit to Azerbaijan. We expect that the European Union will officially start working on this project. The Azerbaijani side stands ready for the negotiations on this issue," he said at a press conference with the Greek foreign minister.

Georgia has signed an Association Agreement with the EU, but Azerbaijan has been consistent in rejecting one. Armenia had plans to sign an Association Agreement with the EU, but in September 2013 instead chose to join the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union

Azerbaijan has said many times it wants a strategic relationship with the EU and that it wants to translate some of the work it has done bilaterally with EU member states into an overarching agreement. The EU says it is ready to cooperate.
