Many countries celebrate International Workers Day

Today is International Workers' Day (also known as May Day). It is a celebration of the international labour movement usually marked with street demonstrations and marches by working people and their labour unions throughout most of the world.

May 1 is a national holiday in more than 80 countries. It is also celebrated unofficially in many other countries.

Mayday used to be an important hoiliday in the former USSR and is still celebrated in Russia and many of the former Soviet Republics, although it does not have today the ideological significance of the past.

In Armenia which is in the midst of an election campaign, some parties are taking the opportunity to intensify their meetings with voters, whilst some street marches are also planned.

Mayday is also celebrated in many European union countrties where Labour Unions and Social Democractic parties also hold public manifestations.
