Buckingham Palace has announced that the president of Turkey, Abdulla Gul will make a state visit to the United Kingdom from 22-24 November 2011. The last State Visit by a Turkish president to the UK was in 1988 (www.royal.gov.uk)

The visit marks a high point in British-Turkish relations. The UK has been one of the biggest supporters of Turkish accession to the European Union. There are however some difficult issues in the relationship, including on Cyprus, relations with Iran and the future of the Middle East.
