In a rare show of unity 14 Azerbaijani political parties joined an initiative of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party and issued a joint statement critical of the resolution adopted on Thursday by the European Parliament on the release of Ramil Safarov.Amongst the signatories of the statement were the Musavat Party and the Popular Front Party, both of which form the hard core opposition to current Azerbaijani leadership.
Representatives agreed the statement after ameeting held in the offices of the ruling party in Central Baku on Friday afternoon.
The statement accuses the European Parliament of double standards. "The parties signatories of this appeal, regardless of their political views, and expressing the concern of the whole Azerbaijani public over this issue, once again express their strong and clear protest against the resolution of the European Parliament and assess the biased facts reflected in the document as a demonstration of the policy of double standards", the statement reads.
The statement said that the European Parliament had previously adopted a number of statements on Azerbaijan and that on many occasions "The adopted documents contained objective reflection of the main problem facing Azerbaijan related to Armenia's aggression and the Nagorno Karabakh conflict."
At the same, the representatives of the political parties of Azerbaijan say that in a number of cases the European parliament adopted documents that are far from the reality due to different interests, especially under the influence of the Armenian lobby.
"We consider it more expedient for such influential international organizations as the European parliament to take real steps in the resolution of the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia rather than to take steps supporting the aggressive policy of Armenia", the statement says.
