Armenia is adopting an active “deterrence system” in its dealings with Azerbaijan over the disputed province of Nagorno-Karabakh, a step up from its existing “static defence” policy.
The new system is intended to be both a reactive and a preventive measure, said Davit Tonoian, the first deputy minister of defence.
The news follows a strategic review of Armenia’s defence capacity, and was presented at an Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) military doctrine seminar, in Vienna.
The new system will make is easier to alleviate future confrontation, said Tonoian.
The two sides have been deadlocked over the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh for more than 20 years.
