Towards the end of October, a lone Azerbaijani Airlines Gulfstream G650 landed in Yerevan, Armenia. It wasn’t the first to do so in over three decades of conflict but it could well change the future of multitrack diplomacy. Although mutual visits by Azerbaijanis to Armenia and Armenians to Azerbaijan are also not new, before October's flight they always occurred under the auspices of an international organisation or intergovernmental body including countries outside the region. Last month’s visit not only flew direct between the capitals but was bilaterally agreed.

In a statement issued to the media on Sunday evening (23 January), Sargissian indicated that he was frustrated at the lack of power of the presidency, which under the current Armenian constitution is largely an honorary position. In his statement Sargissian said, "the President does not have the necessary tools to influence the radical processes of domestic and foreign policy in these difficult times for the country and the nation."

A delegation of EU diplomats is currently in the South Caucasus to follow-up on discussions held in Brussels last December in the framework of the VI Eastern Partnership Summit, particularly as related to Armenia-Azerbaijan relations. The delegation is led by Toivo Klaar, the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and  Isabel Dumont, the French President's Adviser on Continental Europe and Turkey.  France currently has the rotating presidency of the European Union.

Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Monday (27 December) that the first meeting of Turkish and Armenian special envoys is expected to be held in Moscow to discuss the way forward in the normalization of relations between the two countries Speaking in a televised press conference, the top Turkish diplomat noted that the meeting's location was in accordance with Armenia's request.
