Trump aims to bring Azerbaijan, Central Asian nations into Abraham Accords

US President Donald Trump's administration is actively discussing with Azerbaijan the possibility of bringing that nation and some Central Asian allies into the Abraham Accords, hoping to deepen their existing ties with Israel, according to five sources with knowledge of the matter who spoke to Reuters. As part of the Abraham Accords, inked in 2020 and 2021 during Trump's first term in office, four Muslim-majority countries agreed to normalise diplomatic relations with Israel after U.S. mediation.

Armenia and Azerbaijan to sign peace memorandum in Washington

Azerbaijan and Armenia are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding in Washington on Friday 8 August, committing to the pursuit of peace, according to regional sources who spoke to Middle East Eye (MEE). The move commits the two countries to a future peace deal amid increasing US influence in the South Caucasus. The sources said that US President Donald Trump will host Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the White House for the signing ceremony.

A delegation of EU diplomats is currently in the South Caucasus to follow-up on discussions held in Brussels last December in the framework of the VI Eastern Partnership Summit, particularly as related to Armenia-Azerbaijan relations. The delegation is led by Toivo Klaar, the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and  Isabel Dumont, the French President's Adviser on Continental Europe and Turkey.  France currently has the rotating presidency of the European Union.

The EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, in a statement on Wednesday (22 December), said Russia's actions in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus have created new threats and fears of invasion, and that Europe was today under threat. Borrell's statement was in response to Russia's recent attempts to re-define Europe's security architecture. On Wednesday, Borrell also discussed the situation with US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken.

Rapporteurs say Armenian and Azerbaijani experts working on a report on how short, medium and long-term confidence building measures can contribute to lasting peace in the South Caucasus are on schedule to publishing their report next March. The group is currently engaging with both governmental and non-governmental stakeholders, and a number of interim discussion papers will also be published over the next weeks.
