Somalia is amplifying its defence cooperation with Egypt and Turkey. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud attended a deployment parade in Cairo this week for Egyptian troops heading to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
At the same time, Mogadishu received Turkish naval units, including the landing ship TCG Sancaktar, as part of Ankara’s expanding security partnership with Somalia. Somali defence officials said the visit aligns with efforts to build the country’s navy and coast guard capabilities. Somali media also reported the arrival of a Turkish Air Force A400M Atlas transport aircraft, linked to ongoing military support and equipment deliveries.
Somalia has defence cooperation agreements with both Egypt and Turkey. Cairo and Ankara have reiterated support for Somalia’s territorial integrity and opposition to any recognition of separatist entities amid continuing threats from militant groups.
