The Georgian president, Giorgi Margvelashvili, has announced that he will not be contesting presidential elections, scheduled to be held on 28 October.
Speaking at a meeting with students President Margvelashvili said he started his public life working for the citizens of Georgia, and continued to do so as president. He said that this will also be what he plans to do in the future, and although he will not be contesting for the presidency he will find other ways in which he can continue contributing to his country.
Following amendments to the constitution in 2017, the 2018 elections will be the last direct presidential vote; after 2018 presidents will be elected by the 300-member College of Electors. In view of these changes, the term of office of the President to be elected in 2018 will have a term of six years.
