Armenia and Azerbaijan are reporting ongoing clashes late into the night in the northern sector of their international border in the region of Tavush/Tovuz. Azerbaijani sources say that one of their villages has been shelled by heavy mortar fire, whilst the Armenian side claims that the Azerbaijanis have used grenade launchers and a tank.

The situation on the border remained tense throughout the day after incidents flared up around midday. Azerbaijan says three of its soldiers were killed and several others injured in the incidents. The Armenian side has so far not reported any casualties.

There are reports of clashes on Sunday afternoon (12 July) in the northern sector of the international border between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Armenian and Azerbaijani military sources are giving different accounts of the incidents.

Azerbaijan initially said that two of its soldiers died in the fighting and five were injured. Azerbaijani media later reported that a third soldier who was injured had now died. Azerbaijani named the soldiers as Vugar Latif Cavus Sadigov, Elshad Dönmez Mammedov
and Khayyam Magomed Dashdemirov.

Azerbaijani sources say there were also Armenian casualties, but the Armenian Ministry of Defence, whilst confirming the skirmish said its troops suffered no casualties.

The two sides report the use of artillery during the incident that happened early in the afternoon.

The Azerbaijani Deputy Minister of Defence Lt General Nizam Osmanov was later reported by the Azerbaijani media to be on the scene. Both sides say they have the situation under control.

The area is far away from the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone and is near the region of Tavush (Armenia)/Tovuz (Azerbaijan). There have been incidents in this part of the border before.

Thursday Interview: Murad Muradov

Today, commonspace.eu starts a new regular weekly series. THURSDAY INTERVIEW, conducted by Lauri Nikulainen, will host  persons who are thinkers, opinion shapers, and implementors in their countries and spheres. We start the series with an interview with Murad Muradov, a leading person in Azerbaijan's think tank community. He is also the first co-chair of the Action Committee for a new Armenian-Azerbaijani Dialogue. Last September he made history by being the first Azerbaijani civil society activist to visit Armenia after the 44 day war, and the start of the peace process. Speaking about this visit Murad Muradov said: "My experience was largely positive. My negative expectations luckily didn’t play out. The discussions were respectful, the panel format bringing together experts from Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey was particularly valuable during the NATO Rose-Roth Seminar in Yerevan, and media coverage, while varied in tone, remained largely constructive. Some media outlets though attempted to represent me as more of a government mouthpiece than an independent expert, which was totally misleading.  Overall, I see these initiatives as important steps in rebuilding trust and normalising professional engagement. The fact that soon a larger Azerbaijani civil society visits to Armenia followed, reinforces the sense that this process is moving in the right direction."
