Armenia and Armenian communities worldwide mark Genocide Day

People in Armenia, and Armenian communities throughout the world, on Tuesday (24 April) marked Genocide Day - remembering those killed in the atrocities committed in Anatolia in the last days of the Ottoman Empire in 1915.

In Yerevan, the President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian, Acting Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan, Speaker of Parliament Ara Babloyan, Cabinet members, MPs, and leaders from Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as other officials, payed their respects in the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial. Also present was Garegin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians who delivered prayer at the Eternal Flame.

This year the enniversary has taken a special significance following the days of street protests which yesterday led to the resignation of prime minister Serzh Sargsyan. The leader of the popular movement that led the protests, Nikol Pashinyan, called on supporters to march to the memorial later in the afternoon.

Armenian communities throughout the world will also hold ceremonies marking the anniversary.
