US kills IS-K target in a drone attack in Afghanistan

In eastern Afghanistan, the United States carried out a drone attack on IS-Khorasan, the regional branch of the terrorist group Islamic State. The target, a member of the group, was killed, reports the US Department of Defence.

It is widely assumed that the Afghan branch of the terrorist group IS, IS Khorasan, is behind the suicide bombing on the International Airport in Kabul last Thursday (26 August) were thirteen US soldiers and so far 170 civilians were killed. These Islamic extremists are more radical than the Taliban, who have taken power in the country in recent weeks. Because IS sees the Taliban as apostates, the two are enemies.

The US attack was carried out in Afghanistan's Nangarhar province, east of Kabul, on the border with Pakistan. According to the Pentagon, "no civilian casualties" were killed in the drone attack.

The target was said to be an IS member involved in planning attacks. "Initial indications are that we killed the target", the statement said. It remains unclear whether the target was involved in the attack near Kabul airport on Thursday.

A Reaper drone, which took off from the Middle East, struck the target in a car, along with a second member of IS. Both were reported killed.

China and the EU agree on climate change action in Beijing summit but disagree on trade and Ukraine

China and the European Union have issued a joint call to action on climate change during an otherwise tense bilateral summit in Beijing on Thursday 24 July but major disagreements remain over trade and the war in Ukraine.  The two sides issued a joint statement on climate change, urging more emission cuts and greater use of green technology and affirming their support for the Paris Climate Agreement as well as calling for strong action at the upcoming COP30 climate summit in Brazil. European Council President António Costa called on China to use its influence over Russia to bring an end to the war in Ukraine, a long-standing plea from European leaders that is likely to fall once again on deaf ears.
