Trump will attend the NATO summit in The Hague

The US President Donald Trump will definitely be attending the NATO summit. This information was released by White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt on Monday (23 June), according to Reuters. The United States is the most important member of the military alliance. Trump has pressured member states to increase their defence spending, with the aim of making NATO less dependent on the US. Member states have now agreed to eventually spend 5% of their GDP on defence.

On Saturday night, the United States bombed nuclear facilities in Iran. In light of Trump's active involvement in the conflict between Israel and Iran, it was unclear whether he would still travel to The Hague. This would have been Trump's first visit to the Netherlands as president.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Armenia wanted to become a member fo the European Union within twenty years and will commit to an ambitous reform programme to meet the criteria of EU accession. In a press conference on 16 July, Pashinyan referred to his recent visit in Brussels and said the law adopted by the Armenian parliament meant the country seeks to join the EU. He acknowledged that this was not a simple process and all EU member states needed to agree to Armenia’s membership. He emphasised that regardless of whether Armenia ultimately joins the EU, the country will continue its ambitious reform programme.
