Thousands swim from Asia to Europe in traditional Istanbul race

Thousands of people on Sunday jumped into the Bosphorus to swim from the Asian side to the European side of the iconic city of Istanbul

Around 2400 people participated in the Samsung Bosphorus Cross Continental swim which is organised annually by the Turkish Olympic Committee. This was the 30th race, the first being held in 1989. Swimmers came from 55 countries but mostly were Turks since only a few slots are reserved for foreign swimmers. The Bosphorus, one of the most important ans strategic sea lanes in the world was closed for traffic during the race.

Israel and Syria have technically been at war since 1948.
