Georgia has a new president. Salome Zurabishvili became the first women to be elected to the post, after a convincing win in the second round of elections held on Wednesday (28 November) following a bitter and bruising campaign.
Zurabishvili who was supported by the ruling Georgian Dream Party won 59.55% of the vote, whilst the candidate of the United Opposition, Grigol Vashadze, secured 40.45%.
The election was held largely peacefully, and while there were reports of some sporadic incidents of election violations, overall the election was well administered and polling took place within the established rules.
Zurabishvili is expected to be sworn in as president next month
