The Russian Ministry of Defence in Moscow has confirmed that one of its own fighter jets accidentally dropped a bomb on the Russian city of Belgorod overnight.
Russian authorities said the bomb fell at 22:15 local time on Thursday (20 April), with no explanation for the bombing given other than what it described as an "abnormal descent of aviation ammunition".
Regional Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said three people were injured and several buildings damaged, with the blast leaving a huge crater about 20m wide in the city centre.
Belgorod lies roughly 40km from the Ukrainian border, near their second city of Kharkiv. Since the start of the full-scale invasion on 24 February last year, Russian bombers have reguarly flown over the city on their way to Ukraine.
