Putin prepares for a week of summits in Sochi

Russian president Vladimir Putin on Saturday (7 October) convened a meeting of the Russian Security Council in the Russian Black Sea city of Sochi.

High on the agenda were preparations for the summits of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and the Eurasia Economic Union  (EEAU, due to be held in the coming days.

Taking part in the meeting of the Russian Security Council were Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko, State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Anton Vaino, Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev, Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Director of the Federal Security Service Alexander Bortnikov and Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service Sergei Naryshkin.

Since Saturday was also the birthday of the Russian president, the members of the council extended their birthday wishes to the President.

There is speculation that on the margins of the CIS Summit, due to be held on Wednesday (11 october), President Putin may also host a long awaited summit with the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan. Details of the agenda of such meeting were discussed in the last days in Yerevan and Baku during the visit to the region by diplomats from the countries trying to mediate a solution to the Karabakh conflict, France, Russia and the United States. read more here
