German Chancellor Angela Merkel travelled to Istanbul on Friday (24 January) at the start of an official visit to Turkey.
The Chancellor joined Turkish president Recip Tayip Erdogan for the opening ceremony of the new German - Turkish University in Istanbul. The two leaders hailed the opening of the university as an important step in cementing Turkish-German relations.
During the opening ceremony ahead of bilateral talks between the two leaders, Erdogan said they would discuss regional dynamics, regional issues, especially Libya, and bilateral relations.
