The Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, has offered Western European countries to take refugees along a special corridor to Europe. "If you need them, take them", Orbán said in a radio interview with public broadcaster Kossuth Radio on Friday (5 November). According to international observers, the prime minister is referring to a corridor from the Serbian to the Austrian border.
Hungary had considerably more asylum seekers per thousand inhabitants in 2015 than most other EU nations. Orbán's government has since made it virtually impossible to get asylum in the country. Migrants are stopped especially at the southern border with Serbia and immediately sent back. Nevertheless, according to Orbán, his country can also create an open corridor for these migrants so that they can move on to the western Europe.
According to the European Union, Hungary's asylum policy violates European and international law. Several infringement proceedings have been initiated against the country.
