A second round of elections will have to be held in order to choose the next president of Georgia as no one of the 25 candidates who ran in the first round secured 50% of the votes cast. With 99% of the votes counted Salome Zurabishvili secured 38.66% closely followed by Grigol Vashadze with 37.7%. David Bakradze was a distant third with 10.97%. All the other candidates got less than 4%.
According to preliminary data released by Georgia's Central Elections Commission, 1 637 956 voters participated in the elections, 46.74% of those eligible. The election passed peacefully on Sunday. A number of minor incidents were reported and are being investigated.
The second round needs to be held prior to 1 December.
