Georgia and Armenia discuss the strengthening of relations during Kvirikashvili's visit to Yerevan

Georgia and Armenia have pledged to strengthen relations and to work together for peace and stability in the Caucasus region.

Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili on Monday (5 September) was in Yerevan where he met president Serzh Sargsyan and other Armenian leaders

Greeting the Georgian leader President Sargsyan expressed hope that the visit "will signify the further strengthening of the ties between the two friendly nations and will give a new impetus to the interstate relations". Serzh Sargsyan stressed the importance of high-level reciprocal visits which, according to the President, provide a good opportunity to discuss the items on the Armenian-Georgian agenda in a constructive and warm atmosphere as well as to preset new possibilities for cooperation. Noting that Armenia and Georgia are not only friendly states but also the two peoples linked by the centuries-long brotherly relations, which are cherished in Armenia, the President said that it is necessary to develop and strengthen these relations incessantly. According to the President, the current high level of the political dialogue between the two countries allows to further deepen the bilateral relations in all areas, taking them to a qualitatively new level.

Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili noted that Armenia's relations with Georgia date back hundreds of years and added that the Georgian people and Government attach the utmost importance to the development of these relations. According to Giorgi Kvirikashvili, the existing mutual understanding between the two Governments as well as the dynamics of recent years and active trade and economic relations form an excellent base for the further strengthening of relations and developing the huge potential which they offer.

In Giorgi Kvirikashvili's words, strong friendly relations between Armenia and Georgia are important not only for Georgia and Armenia but also for the stability in the South Caucasus.

The website of the Armenian President reported that at the meeting, the parties "discussed opportunities and potential of expanding cooperation in a number of areas of mutual interest".

Turkiye to host COP31 in 2026

A consensus has emerged during COP 30, currently being held in Belan, Brazil, that COP 31 will be held in the Turkish city of Antalya, in 2026. In 2026 Turkiye will host another global event, the NATO leaders summit. Turkiye is set to host COP31 after reaching compromise with Australia.  The COP31 climate meeting is now expected to be held in Turkey after Australia dropped its bid to host the annual event. Under the UN rules, the right to host the COP in 2026 falls to a group of countries made up of Western Europe, Australia and others. A consensus must be reached but neither country had been willing to concede. Australia has now agreed to support the Turkish bid in return for their minister chairing the talks following negotiations at COP30, currently being held in Brazil. This unusual arrangement has taken observers by surprise. It is normal for a COP president to be from the host country and how this new partnership will work in practice remains to be seen. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called the compromise with Turkey an "outstanding result" in an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), noting Pacific issues would be "front and centre". He added that he had spoken to Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape and Prime Minister Rabuka of Fiji. There will be relief among countries currently meeting at COP30 in the Brazilian city of Belém that a compromise has been reached as the lack of agreement on the venue was becoming an embarrassment for the UN.
