EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus met President Aliev in Baku

The European Union Special Representative (EUSR) for the South Caucasus, Herbert Salber, on Thursday 11 August met with President Ilham Aliev of Azerbaijan in Baku. The EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus is mandated by the European Council to, among other things, engage with the sides in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and support the international mediation process led by the OSCE Minsk Process. Herbert Salber has been EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus since July 2014, and in this capacity has visited Armenia and Azerbaijan on numerous occasions over the last two years.

 He also represents the European Union in the Geneva Process on the conflicts in Georgia.

Irakli Kobakhidze reappointed Chairman of Georgian Dream

Irakli Kobakhidze has once again become the chairman of Georgian Dream, the party founded by oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili in 2012 which has since been in power in Georgia. Ivanishvili is the party’s honorary chairman and is widely seen as the country’s shadow ruler. Kobakhidze is also the current prime minister of Georgia and had previously served as party chairman until February 2024. At that time, a political reshuffle took place with then Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili becoming party chairman, while Kobakhidze was nominated for the prime minister’s post.
