Azerbaijani President receives Chinese government delegation in Baku

Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, yesterday (22 June) received a delegation of Chinese officials, led by Song Tao, the head of the International Liaison Department of the Communist Party of China.

Yesterday’s meeting comes shortly after last week’s appointment of Guo Min as the Democratic People’s Republic of China’s new Ambassador to Azerbaijan. At a meeting last week, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov met with Guo Min as she presented him with her ambassadorial credentials. Elmar Mammadyarov praised the Chinese government’s support as a member of the UN Security Council on issues of territorial integrity, and celebrated the ongoing development of the countries’ bilateral relations. Ambassador Guo Min highlighted the number of recent high-profile official visits between the two countries, stressing that she will work to further increase economic and trade relations between the countries in line with their political dialogue.

The sentiment expressed by the new Ambassador echoes that of the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who visited Baku in May this year, as well as that expressed during President Aliyev’s visit to Beijing in April. With Azerbaijan as a signatory of the Chinese government’s Belt and Road project, and with hundreds of millions reportedly invested in each other’s economies, such meetings reinforce that economic and political ties between the two countries are only growing stronger.

Gaza hospital struck twice by Israel killing journalists and rescuers

Israel struck one of the main hospitals in the Gaza strip on Monday 25 August and then hit the facility again as journalists and rescue workers rushed to the scene, killing at least 20 people and wounding many more, local health workers said. It was among the deadliest of multiple Israeli strikes that have hit both hospitals and journalists over the course of the 22-month war, Associated Press reported. The assault came as Israel plans to widen its offensive to heavily populated areas, vowing to destroy Hamas after its 7th October attack in 2023.
