Azerbaijan prepares for constitutional referendum on 26 September (updated)

The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliev on Tuesday set the 26 September as the date for a referendum to approve constitutional changes, including lenghtening the term of office of the president and creating new posts of First Vice President and Vice Presidents.

The Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan on Monday paved the way for the referendum when it declared that the constitutional changes that were initiated by the president were in line with the Constitution of Azerbaijan.

The session of the Constitutional Court was presided by the Chairman of the Court Judge Farhad Abdullayev.
