Australia will recognise Palestine in September

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made this announcement on Monday (11 August) to speed up a two-state solution.

'A two-state solution is humanity's best hope of breaking the vicious cycle of violence in the Middle East, and of ending the conflict, suffering and famine in Gaza,' he said at a press conference.

He announced after a cabinet meeting and said that recognition was conditional on commitments received by Australia from the Palestinian Authority, including the assurance that Hamas would not play any role in a future Palestinian state.

He also said that he had told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a conversation on Thursday that a political, not military, solution was needed.
