Armenian parliament will try to elect a new prime minister on 1 May

The Armenian parliament will meet on Tuesday, 1 May in order to elect a new prime minister following the resignation of Serzh Sargsyan, who stayed in office for less than a week and was forced to resign as a result of street protests.

The ruling Republic Party of Armenia has yet to announce who it will propose. It is likely that opposition parties will rally around one of the leaders of the protest movement, although it is understood that apart from the candidacy of Nikol Pashinyan other options are being considered. Pashinyan earlier said that as a result of the popular protests that have gripped Armenia the new prime minister cannot be someone from the ruling Republican Party.
